A New Song For Me
Have you ever heard a new song that truly resonated with you? Perhaps it was one on the radio or one presented for the first time at your church; and it stayed with you for hours afterwards. Or maybe you’ve had the blessing of creating a new song. I’m not a musician by any means, but I’ve done some singing over the years and there have been a few times in my life when I heard a new song in my head. Sometimes the melody would come to me and a short while later the lyrics would come to my mind. Other times both the music and lyrics flowed out of my heart at the same time with pure inspiration from the Holy Spirit.
In the past month, I’ve had the blessing of hearing two new songs in my head and recorded them quickly before they flew away from memory. One of them was a patriotic song and the other a praise song.
The praise song came first with all the lyrics flowing into my head simultaneously. The patriotic song came about three weeks later, but lyrics have yet to sync in mind with it. Yet, it was clearly a similar style to music by John Phillip Sousa. One like we might hear on the 4th of July. As with the first song, I was rising out of bed that morning when a tune came to me, but not hearing any lyrics for it, I began to whistle it. Ironically, I’ve always found myself whistling many patriotic tunes during 4th of July fireworks and that new song came about two weeks before our 250th celebration of our nation’s birthday–JUST IN TIME TO WHISTLE IT DURING THE FIREWORKS OF THIS YEAR’S SPECIAL CELEBRATION.
Psalm 33: 3 says: “Sing to Him a new song,..” throughout the Psalms, David repeats this theme several other times too. Yet as I considered God’s timeliness of opening my eyes to that very verse, it resonated with me in an amazing way. Considering the new song I received that morning, it spoke to me so clearly about how God is working in our hearts, our country, and the world He created.
You may never experience an actual new song that comes to your mind, but as a believer God likely speaks to you in a way that’s particular to you. He might speak through a work task, a pastor, or a loved one’s affection. Or perhaps, as the Lord most commonly does, He might speak to you more evidently through his word. It might be a verse you’ve read many times, yet that day the words seem to jump off the page. Sadly, there are too many times when we miss or forget His messages to us. We may be overwhelmed with life’s concerns or our duties for the day, and the fog of our worries cloud out God’s voice. We all have times like that. If that’s where you find yourself today and you’re wondering if God will ever answer your prayers,–hang on, give things a rest, and do as it says in Psalm 46:10; “Be still and know that I am God.”
So, though this isn’t written on a music staff, thought you might want to read the lyrics that God gave me to that praise song last month. You’ll see that it’s about revival. In the past several months before I wrote it, I’d seen several accounts on tv about great revivals happening across our great country. That may be why this song came to me, but I hadn’t seen any such accounts for at least two months prior to its’ inspiration. I hope it blesses and encourages you. And I pray God will speak to you also in a special and personal way this week. And who knows, I might get up the nerve to sing it on my next YouTube episode.
